In 2008, I moved from the steel industry to forestry, a move that changed my life forever. The forest immediately gave me peace, strength and a very special connection with nature. My success in the steel industry spurred me on. I wanted to show that I could go far in this industry and so began an intense journey. With my first company, I gained experience in forestry and built up an impressive fleet of machinery. We harvested timber all over Germany, efficiently and on a large scale. Later I moved to one of the largest forestry companies in Germany. Within five years, I increased the annual harvest from 150,000 to 1.2 million solid cubic metres. My job was my life and I was good at it. Everything seemed to be going up. 15 years into my forestry career, I experienced a moment that changed everything. One Sunday morning, while walking my two dogs in the forest in the Sauerland region of Germany, I saw nothing but emptiness: bare areas, dead trees and a destroyed ecosystem. It was a shock. I couldn't deny that I had contributed to it. That moment made me rethink. So much so that in 2023 I founded FINGERHUT GmbH (formerly MFM - Mobile Forest Management GmbH). With the aim of helping German forests to become resilient and healthy without losing sight of profitability. Today I do everything I can for sustainable forestry for man and nature. We currently manage an combined area larger than 70,000 football pitches and have already successfully reforested 600 hectares of forest, with a strong upward trend. Timber harvesting remains an important part of the value chain. But what comes next is just as important - reforestation, maintenance and protection of forests for future generations.
After all, forest owners have a responsibility.
